word sieve

a useful tool I have discovered
in managing worry/stress/anxiety
is creating found poetry

when my thoughts are swirling I put them through a word sieve and see what comes out

I keep it simple (and small)
using cut up book covers as a foundation

I pretty it up with a painted border

and when I'm done
I have a little something to go on when someone says, "what do you think?"

it's not that I didn't know what I think,
it's that I didn't know how to say it

some interesting thoughts about found poetry:

“Happy poets who write found poetry go pawing through popular culture like sculptors on trash heaps. They hold and wave aloft usable artifacts and fragments: jingles and ad copy, menus and broadcasts — all objet trouvĂ©s, the literary equivalents of Warhol’s Campbell’s soup cans and Duchamp’s bicycle. By entering a found text as a poem, the poet doubles its context. The original meaning remains intact, but now it swings between two poles. The poet adds, or at any rate increases, the element of delight. This is an urban, youthful, ironic, cruising kind of poetry. It serves up whole texts, or interrupted fragments of texts.” - Annie Dillard

"All writing is in fact cut ups. A collage of words read, heard, overhead. What else?" - William Burroughs

An Aside:

this duck walked right up to me in the park
he had such confidence
I had to wonder,
is it because he's tame?
or that he knows I am tame?

it's done ...

and I'm done ... toasted ... fried ... dot dot dot
it's been a long week of lots of school activities
(for instance: track meet this afternoon, science fair tonight)
and the only spot of peace has been my peaceful stitching
a moment here
a moment there

and believing that we ARE on the backside of winter

in spite of hail yesterday
snow today
and tomorrow -?- who knows

as they say around here:
"if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes"

how about:
"if your life has gotten crazy, lose yourself in some handwork"

refrigerator poetry and other things

it is cold and drizzly outside

but colorful

and we are indoors with our creativity

one of us is fixing things
(like a broken light switch)
another one is sewing
(an Alice in Wonderland Costume)
another one is working on a 4H project
(growing a rose on it's own root)
and another one is at a friend's house
(probably hanging out and eating candy)

and another one painted a bunch of rocks
(that would be me)

the refrigerator poetry is all anonymous
and who wrote what is a mystery
(none of it came from me)
don't you just LOVE that?

more beach glass

inspired by my beach glass and an old book cover
(devoid of it's pages)

for this piece, I used the entire book cover
I love the dimensionality the spine gives
plus, it can stand alone - or hang on the wall

the back is teabag paper and gesso .... I would love this on my walls

ingredients:
empty book cover
book text
thread
lavender
sea glass
copper wire
tea bag paper
gesso
watercolor paint
acrylic medium

and the sky the last couple of days ....
ingredients:
thunder
lightning
rain

completion

I made this paper bag collage in February and set it aside for completion later
you know how it is - it just wasn't speaking to me yet

it started as a humble trader joe's bag
- layers of collage -
- layers of paint -
- layers of texture -
a little watercolor sketch of the trees out my window
*
but it needed completion

I trimmed it down to fit this beautiful blue linen book cover
added more tea bag papers
a piece of nova scotia beach pottery

children's book text
assembled into a snatch of an idea

thread
(I love thread)

it feels completed now
I think it's breathing a sigh of relief too

the mending instinct

between the repairing of knees and jeans and hearts and stuffed bears
the mending pile tends to grow
... and I try to keep up ...
the patches cover rips
the tears leave scars
the holes are filled
the remembrances of broken things are soothed with stitches slow and steady
bright patches of color
covering the calamity
hope is handed back
freshly washed
neatly folded
ready to wear

*

Happy Mother's Day
to
mothers, sisters, aunties, nannies, grandmothers
women with their piles of mending
and handfuls of hope
