before my trip I got a moleskine journal book
this one is the small pocket sized one with plain paper
I have a problem with sketchbooks and journals
I have so many of them that only have the first 4 or 5 pages are sketched
... the rest is blank ...
I remember hearing as a mantra in drawing class:
"draw something every single day"
and then there's the "morning pages" (Julia Cameron: The Artist's Way):
"write 3 pages every morning"
what is my problem?
here is the one and only drawing I've done in 3 weeks:
I drew it on the plane over there
filled with thoughts and dreams of swimming with the sea turtles
(I did see one from atop a cliff - if the turtles don't feel like finding me and swimming with me - that's o.k. - I don't want to be demanding - it is their ocean home after all)
and as for filling up this journal
... whether it be words or art ...
I am not going to be kicking myself about someone else's so called mantra

I was a writer for many years and I have many journals begun but never finished to the very end. Your turtle drawings are enchanting and the pages will await your next inspiration, or not.
I have a few unfinished journals too...and I seem to start from the back pages because the blank pages at the front scare me, at the back its not as daunting!
I've just signed up for Carla Sonheim's online drawing class with the hope of filling some of my pages!
Just in case your interested its:

We're kindred souls, Kimmie. I can't tell you how many times I've purchased a journal, sketchbook, etc. hoping that it would entice me to "draw every day". N-O-T!!! I've got a bunch of journals with just a few quick sketches. **sigh** Hugs, Terri xoxo
I have a bit of a problem myself with the acquisition of beautiful paper journals that are almost all blank. I think I'll take your attitude, though --
Love this journal !!!!!
If I could draw like you do, I would have no problem filling a page everyday! Your water colors and drawings are simply stunning Kimmie!! Thanks for sharing the stunning beauty you do create for us to enjoy!
Hugs,
Robin
Your doodles/zentangles are stunning. Of course I don't draw. I couldn't agree more. Art in any form must come from within and not on a timetable. Forcing something is the best way to burn out. Great that you are not allowing others to dictate your creativity.
I have lots of partially finished journals!!! I am going to send you an email (with her permission) of a friend's trip and pix to St. John's - she went snorkeling and got some fabulous underwater shots of turtles - I thought of you!!!!!

At least you are starting things!
Have a wonderful day

you go girl...you do what works for you. i used to have many unfilled, small, lined journals...then i discovered the BIG ones with blank pages...and now i like the big ones with GRAPH paper...and i use them almost every day...to write grocery lists, class lists, draw doodles, write down techniques i think of, inspirational color palettes, jewelry ideas...and i keep it by my main chair but it's big enough for me to find if i use it somewhere else...now, i finish them and look forward to the next one...
your little moleskine with the sketches is delightful, i love how you draw...i think if you keep it in your purse always, you might find that you will pull it our more often..
I like blogging for this... it doesn't have the same appeal or the feeling of new beginnings, but it has a freedom that allows the thing to get done.
I bought a whole set of different sized journals, some lined , some not to start gratitude , writing, etc before summer began.
they are all blank except the little one in my purse that I jot down things in. which is really becoming more of a must do or see or buy list that is starting to make me feel worse instead of better....
sorry for the ramble.
and i am so jealous of your artistic talent. nicely and respectively covetous of course :)
I love Moleskine! I have all sorts of Moleskine notebooks around. At my desk, in my bags, everywhere... so that I can jot things down when inspiration hits. Your drawings are beautiful!
one page at a time. I, too, LOVE HEART am PASSIONATE about Moleskines. Take your time. And - if you have to many blank pages - rip them out, or glue them together. Just because Moleskine gives you all those pages, doesn't mean YOUR sketchbook has to keep all of them... :-). Just a thought....
I feel so much better after reading your post and all the comments. We are not alone! Great ideas here. what I've learned today is that a journal is not meant to be filled in a year or a set period of time. I guess that's why there are no places for dates, like in a diary or appointment book. Duh!
