a tale of two cameras

it started this morning with a plate of crepes in the morning light
I grabbed my "handy" camera (nikon coolpix s6300) and had mediocre results
then I pulled out my Dad's "special" camera (nikon d200) and got a stunner

so later today, I took my project outside -
shooting the same things with the two different cameras
the differences are striking

but in defense of the handy little guy, I would never have gotten a picture like this:
(all of these were taken only because I had my pocket camera with me in my purse)

(taken while on the anacortes ferry - this is Friday Harbor)

or this:
(taken while on my morning walk)

or this:
(taken from my car while sitting in the driveway)

but it was "the beast" that got this great one from today's experiment:

my conclusion to this tale?
I'm glad I have two cameras to choose from

... and then I have some film cameras (also from my Dad) begging for me to give them a try ...
Hasselblad and a 1964 Nikon F
any advice, experience, etc.?

I think all your photos are amazing ! I know that statement adds nothing to the debate on cameras, but I truly believe that it's the content of the photo that makes it great or not ( and of course there is my old friend "editing" that can turn a poor quality image into a "better" one) I have a bloogy friend who is an amazing photographer and loves to shoot with film, Justine Gordon http://justinegordon.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/some-film-shots.html

That's amazing Kimmie! I always loved my little pocket camera. I had a Canon Powershot A400 for years. Then I got my Nikon Coolpix L810 and I love it too. But I almost like my daughters smart phone camera the best.LOL She can take the best pics and also edit and just do tons of neat photo stuff I don't even know what all it can do.

Sounds like it's time to expand and use all those cameras, these are great shots even if the coolpix isn't perfect, it's the eye behind it that counts. xox

It's weird Kimmie. I bought a CoolPix recently, but took it back unopened because it didn't have a memory card. I'm sure it took fantastic photos, but it was not like YOUR camera, which I LUST over (grin).

Your camera skills are far superior to mine. I think the CoolPix is perfect. I like the crepes shot you took with it better than your dad's camera. It's all in the eye of the beholder, I think. Of course, you have a pretty spectacular eye!!

It really is something how the lighting and coloring is so different with cameras. I've noticed that, too. Some are true to color and some are not. Your photos are lovely and it's always nice to experiment and play. Have fun! And have a wonderful week. Tammy

Whatever the tool, having a camera to capture moments of beauty is something I am so grateful for.

Funnily enough I was just discussing with my Dad today my borrowing one of his old film cameras.

I'm lucky enough to have a top of the range compact, two good DSLRs with assorted lens and an iPhone to choose from, before I start on my Dad's cameras ... sometimes I'm spoilt for choice!

As to advice nothing beats testing, testing, testing to learn each camera's individual foibles and what works best for you. And I look the Coolpix crepe shot best too :D

Oops, that should be like the Coolpix!

All lovely photos and fun experiment! I am pretty spoiled with my Nikon D600 and nice Nikon lenses still don't know all there is to know about photography...it's a just hobby. I have to admit, sometimes all that heavy equipment is not always the easiest to carry around! So glad I just have my iPhone to shoot with here and there. Oh, and love your Friday Harbor photo! We will be on that ferry this Monday heading over to FH for a little vaca. Happy weekend my friend...enjoy the lovely weather!

Your photographs are spectacular! I think all artists need at least two cameras. One to keep in your purse to catch spontaneous photos and trip photos when you don't want to carry a heavy camera. And then there is that super duper DSL when we want more! Linda
