but, it seems like there is even more light here:
the smoky cast is gone and the black background is almost magic to me

and then this photo has amazing color:
and didn't translate to b&w quite so well because of the blueness of the sky:
the two colors (blue and green) are too similar - so it's monochromatic in b&w

I'm enjoying your b/w series. I'm always surprised by what photos I like converted. You are delving into the science of it. I tend to fly by the seat of my pants, maybe this will help me!
All great images. I am a very 'random' photographer and my appreciation of photos is just as random...sometimes my mood dictates how I connect with an image regardless of the "technicalities". I do like your analysis tho and will think a little more about 'why' some images are better than others.
