tea and minor details

as I was having my morning cuppa,
I read over my previous post
and thought I was short on a few details about that so-called super easy box to make

o.k. - laugh at my book
it was FREE
on the FREE BOOKS shelf at my used bookstore

so detail number one is:
use a book that you (or just about anyone else) won't be needing later
(if you needed this book - sorry, it's too late now)

next detail:
cutting the corners out is easiest done using crummy scissors that cut through ANYTHING

and then:
score your lines on the FRONT side of the book
(also, it WILL have an imperfect and ragged appearance - do NOT strive for perfection)

and lastly:
if you are covering the top edges like I did,
do it BEFORE assembling (folding) the box together

*
now, before you go looking for your local used bookstore and their shelf of free books,
put the kettle on and make yourself a nice hot cuppa
those old books aren't going anywhere
oh,
and thanks ever so for stopping by for tea!
I love it when you do!
(p.s. I'm on a school field trip today, so I'll stop by the blogs later on this afternoon)

great idea and use for old books. I've made boxes out of old Christmas cards, but never book covers. Yours look much sturdier.

I had to laugh at the book choice. I'm really loving your revised instructions, although I found the previous set really good. I'm off to steep some tea so I can have a tea post today. Just stopping by while it's still dark outside.

cup of green tea here. thanks for the added directions. once, i was married to an artist who taught me how to make boxes. although i rarely do. I bought a little woven pin from a woman at a craft fair last year and she MADE the lovely little boxes to put the pins in and not only that decorated the top with shells and beads. !!! impressive.

Love the title of the book! Too funny.

Gosh - I linked, but I'm a coffee/latte everyday kinda gal - Tea sometimes in the afternoon.

Great directions, as usual Kimmie. I may just give this a try - assuming I can actually cut apart a book - the mental anguish of it all!

Kimmie, I made boxes so similar a couple of months back when I thought I was going to be doing a show. I needed something to hold my cards I was going to sell. Ended up not doing the show but they'll be ready for the next one. I just cut each piece separately, glued together and decoupaged book pages over all in one box and the bottom in another box. I imagine the way you did it is easier. I love your assortment!

A box from an old book?! Kimmie, you are a freakin' GENIUS. Love it!

And thanks for generously giving us the "how-to" so we can all appear to be GENIUSes. :)

I will have to try this!! I can get old book covers and spines from the book dept at the thrift store where I volunteer- never know what you'll find behind the scenes!!!leave it to you too turn an old book into something useful!!!

Thanks for the tutorial, love the humor, maybe you should fill the box with bones and not pencils...enjoy your field trip. xox Corrine

Love your creations. I think I will give it a go in a day or two. Thanks. I won't say anything about your questionable reading material! LOL

I love ,love, love these recycled book cover boxes you've made....very clever and they look fantastic. Glad you clarified a few things tho. So you don't use the complete cover, front, back and spine, you just cut the spine out and use the front or back ? Once you have the sides folded up, then I assume they are only held together with the string, cord or fabric ? Thanks so much for sharing your great idea and happy Tuesday Tea to you. No tea post for me today, or next week.....off on holiday on Friday yah !!!
