treasure

on a recent trip down to the lake shore
(Lake Washington)
with the kids
I came home with the usual pocketful of discovered treasures
... funny thing about this collection though ...
out of 8 things in my pocket
7 of them are man made.
3 bottlecaps
4 beach glass pieces
and
one rock with an interesting orange stripe

I made one of the pieces of glass into a necklace
it had a perfect hole running through it

this is an interesting bottle cap
session beer is a brand - but also any beer that is 5% alcohol or less
meaning that you can drink more than one and have a "session."
or you can play
rock
paper
scissors
with your six pack I guess

you may have noticed that I've taken a break from the oil spill animal series
I must confess that I am completely over the top depressed and discouraged about this whole mess
I've been escaping and goofing off
watching parades
drinking tea
pocketing bottle caps

I may be at a standstill
because
the next animal on my list is

I am devastated by his plight

he is the smallest and most endangered of the seven types of sea turtles
and the gulf of mexico is his home

It has been reported that the turtles are being incinerated with the oil in the vicinity of the Deepwater Horizon. They get caught in the booms that collect the surface oil - and even though it is evident and obvious that they are there - rather than rescuing them, BP is burning them and everything else caught within the booms. However, there is a $50,000 fine that comes with killing one of these turtles. Do you think that is a deterrent to BP?

  1. Oh yes, the Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle is one of my loves. I live about 2 hours north of South Padre Island where the Sea Turtle Inc. is located. This is where over 12,000 nests are protected every year and 750,000 hatachlings are released into the Gulf every year. Visit www.seaturtleinc.com for more info. You are doing a great job for awareness here. I had no idea what BP was doing to the turtles. It makes me ill.

  3. Summer treasures are the BEST!!! Great finds, Kimmie. What a nice way to 'take a break' and clear your mind.

On that sad note, when I read about the turtles and the possibility that BP is incinerating them, I actually felt physically ill . . . . I can't even go there. Such a tragedy in so many ways. Hugs, Terri xoxo

  4. You are really lucky to have found that glass that had the hole in it already, and I love the rusty "session" cap. It was great that you explained the relevance of it.

I am sick over reading about these turtles today. Is there nothing this company has done right?

  6. I hear you -- I've had to back off on the newsgathering of late because it's just so overwhelming and while I believe staying informed is an important responsibility, listening to the endless cycle of bad news is not serving anyone.

I look forward to seeing your new art but love taking a break with you!

  9. I'm glad you found treasures and let us in as to what you think about as you collect and what you do with them.

The grief about the sea and the animals leaves us all wordless. I hope that you will continue with your series... even sadly.. so that at least in our sadness we can learn something about each of these guiltless creatures.

  10. I love your finds, especially the sea washed glass, reminds me of my holidays as a little girl when pieces like that would have been such treasures, and if I'm honest they still are. Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog, much appreciated.

I'm speechless about the turtles, it just beggers belief....
