fabric transfer

my friend Jean (Bluebirds Living in the Meadow) 
posted a video about Citra-Solv (HERE's her post)
and that got me started on the following odyssey:

trip to the hardware store 
(no citra-solv)
trip to the health food store 
(found it!)
altering magazine photos
(messy!)
finding a how-to for transferring photos to fabric
(HERE's the link)
a trip to the copy center
an attempt at transferring photocopy onto fabric
(wrong kind of photocopy machine)
another trip to a different copy center
transferring a photocopy onto fabric
(success!)
and all the while hoping my brain cells are still ok after breathing the stuff
(it says "all natural," but it IS a solvent)


this is what I photocopied
(my watercolor from last week)


whoa ... this looks really different!
it's much softer much foggier much fainter and much more muted


the fabric I used is muslin


I will be adding some hand stitching
(I'll post pictures of that too)

do you think you might try it?

    It is so pretty and so is your banner piece!
    Yes, I will try it...have done somethings like this on fabric/photos/transferring but not exactly. your painting looks terrific this way. Can't wait to see the hand stitches.

    gosh it came out gorgeous and you are persistant for sure. I actually use citra-solve to clean with so have some on hand but doubt I will try this if it takes all these trips. I have yet to make a successful transfer of any kind.

    That turned out amazing :) I love the close-ups, they are so clearly printed! Stitching on it would be great too! Nicely done, I'm off to read the post.

    This came out pretty amazing, and you used a colored copy. Citri-solv does take grease off my husband's bike chain, so it is pretty powerful stuff, good adivce about not breathing it in. Can't wait to see how this looks with stitching. xox Corrine

    I belong to a yahoo fabric transfer group and keep reading about all the techniques...have yet to try any of them! This is neat!

    me and solvents aren't friends.

    i love
    LOVE
    transfers onto muslin, but

    i am seriously not friends with solvents.

    I will be pretty darn pleased to see the stitching on this finished piece. I like the transfer now, I'll LOVE it with stitching!!

    Can't wait to get to my new house, unpack all my art supplies, and start playing. This is so nice, Kimmie. I can see it made into a pillow, framed as art, and many other uses too (maybe even as the flap on a hand-made purse...I love doing this and making an absolutely unique purse).

    your process made me smile...the things we do when we get an idea and MUST see it to the end...SO worth it...I certainly would like to try that some time...thank you for the inspiration and the links

    I love the soft effect from the transfer, but I won't be trying the copier or the citra-solve any time soon. Love how you made it work, though.

    Ilove how this came out! will definitely give this a try. FYI, you might want to try fabric prepared for dyeing (PFD) which is very white and a very tight weave. you might get a different, maybe clearer effect.

    I will never ever think of security envelopes in the same way ever again! Your work is amazing and I adore both your water color and your citra solv transfer! All just beautiful work - I'm going to have to come back more often!! I am in the midst of navigating around the world of 'transfers' - it looks like you've mastered many!
